12 easy ways to clear negative energy from your house. A cleansing technique for every month of the year!
1. Clearly set an intention for your home.
First set a specific intention for your home. What do you want your space to help you release? How do you want your home to feel?
For example, you could say: "My intention is to clear the negative energy from my home so I am productive and happy" or "I want to release energy from my past negative relationships and feel at peace." Don't just think it, visualise it and speak it! Tell the spirits/universe/your god/dess, what you are doing and why.
2. Burning dried herbs to cleanse your place
Herbs have been burned since ancient times to clear negative energy. Use your Jack In The Green Space Clearing kit or check out the smudge sticks on the incense page. To use a smudge stick simply light one end and then blow it out. The smouldering orange embers will continue burning. Then fan these embers while spreading smoke thoroughly into every nook and cranny of each room. You can use your hand but a hand held fan is very good to use for this.
Note: If you are sensitive to smoke or have asthma this method is not recommended. Clear your house using aromatherapy instead or use lemons (see tips No's 7 & 8).
3. Strategically place crystals around your home
Crystals have been used for thousands of years. They are gifts from the earth that carry various beneficial vibrational properties. Two good crystals to clear negative energy are black tourmaline and hematite. You can put them around your home but be sure to cleanse them regularly. Remember to use your selenite from the Jack In The Green Space Clearing Kit too.
4. 'Rough Music' - Making noise to cleanse your home
The sound of drums, and even clapping hands can help break up negative energy. Here in Britain we used to 'Beat The Bounds' walking around the fields and farms. You can 'beat your own bounds' by starting at your front door and move clockwise through the inner perimeter of your home, playing instruments (or clapping) toward the walls, bells and drums are particularly good, until you've made a full loop. You could also rattle and bang pots and pans.
In the past this was called 'rough music' and was used to drive out bad spirits and also used to punish people such as wife beaters by banging in front of their doors and taking them in a cart around the village.
5. Use Palo Santo scented wood to clear negative energies
Palo Santo is a type of fragrant wood that's native to South America and can be burned as incense. Used for clearing negative energy you light one end of a stick from your kit and spread the smoke around as you would with your dried herbs. Mine is sustainably sourced and comes in various pack sizes.
6. Cleanse your house with salt
Salt has been used for sterilising everything from kitchen implements to wounds. Here are some ways to use it in your home:
Dissolve sea salt in a spray bottle filled with water and mist the air of every room.
Place a thin line of sea salt in front of your home's entrance or around the perimeter of your property.
Include a small dish of salt on your altar.
Dissolve salt in water used to clean surfaces and floors.
7. Give your house a fresh, lemony scent to bring in positive energy using fresh fruit
There's a reason so many cleaning products are lemon-scented. The smell of lemon is naturally invigorating and very positive. Use it in your home to:
Simmer lemon peels in water and let the steam scent your space.
Leave small dishes filled with fresh lemon slices around your home.
8. Use aromatherapy to clear your house of bad energy
Lemon isn't the only scent that can give your space a quick boost: Sage, lavender and frankincense essential oils are great at clearing negativity. Use them in a burner or fill a clean spray bottle with equal parts witch hazel and distilled water, add 20-30 drops of essential oil of choice, shake, and mist your living space.
9. Use your imagination and the power of your intention
Imagine a bright glowing, gold light inside your heart. Take deep breaths in and out breathing steadily and expand this light until it radiates outside of your body. Now beam that light out into your home, shining your light into every dark and hidden corner. Using the power of your imagination really feel it clearing away all the stale and negative energy and filling your home with bright light instead. Positive thought will really help your mental health too which is a very important aspect of any cleansing ritual.
10. Clear out your clutter to cleanse your home
Dirt and clutter can make really make your space feel unwelcoming. Make sure to keep your home clutter free as this means that negative energy won't have a place to congregate. It also cuts down on homes for insects and spiders too! Your house will feel so much fresher and lighter and you will feel better too. Another benefit is your things will be much easier to find as well.
11. Grow plants to keep negativity at bay.
Grow fresh scents by placing fragrant plants such as herbs around your home. Did you know that the bay tree is a protective plant? Traditionally it used to be placed outside the front door of the house for this reason. If you have an open fire you could burn some of the dried leaves or just pick fresh sprigs to put around the house. You can use the leaves in cooking too.
12. Open your windows to shoo out negative energy
Open your windows as letting fresh air in also lets negative energy out. Do this during any cleansing you do. Aside from this just opening them regularly at other times will keep the energy moving and not stagnating in corners. It will keep the air moving in your home replacing stale air with fresh. So throw your windows open and take a deep breath for health and home!
Use any one of these practices on a regular basis, or try a new one each month and you will feel lighter and more positive, and better able to take inspired action in your life!
